Today let's talk about positioning, and why it's probably the single biggest factor in your success as a creative.
Positioning is how and where you sit in the market, and how your potential customers perceive you.
And here’s the truth: if you're poorly positioned, you’re probably dealing with one or more of the following:
-
Not well known (let’s be honest, you’re anonymous)
-
Lack of sales flow (those opportunities just aren’t showing up)
-
Feeling like you have to compete on price, scared to charge more
-
Easily replaceable
-
Letting clients dictate the terms
-
Stuck with only local clients
Sound familiar?
The thing is, positioning can fix all of this. When you become a specialist, you stop competing in a sea of generalists. You become the expert, and here’s what happens:
-
You face little competition
-
You can charge a premium for your services
-
Clients start trusting you to make the decisions
-
You’re seen as someone with deep expertise, and trust me, that’s invaluable
Your goal should be simple: make it easier for clients to find you than your competitors. Once they find you, you need to give them a reason to care.
The Four Fears of Specializing (and why they’re bullshit)
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But if I specialize, I’ll miss out on opportunities.” That’s one of the biggest fears I hear when people think about narrowing their focus.
Let’s break it down.
Fear #1: I’ll miss out on opportunities
-
Reality Check 1: Specializing allows you to build a deeper expertise. You’re not missing out; you’re attracting high-quality opportunities tailored to your strengths.
-
Reality Check 2: You can command higher rates because clients will pay more for someone who’s an expert.
-
Reality Check 3: A clearer brand identity. Specializing makes marketing easier. People instantly know what you’re about.
-
Reality Check 4: You’ll get better referrals. People recommend you for what you do best. The more you’re known for that specific thing, the more likely you are to be recommended.
Fear #2: I’ll get bored
-
Reality Check 1: Mastery brings satisfaction. Diving deep into one area can be incredibly fulfilling.
-
Reality Check 2: Specialization isn’t limiting your creativity—it’s enhancing it. By focusing, you’ll find new depths to explore.
-
Reality Check 3: Even as a specialist, there’s a wide variety of projects within your niche, keeping things dynamic.
-
Reality Check 4: Choose something you’re passionate about. When your work aligns with your passions, boredom won’t be an issue.
Fear #3: I don’t have enough experience
-
Reality Check 1: You have to start somewhere. Specializing allows you to focus and gain experience faster.
-
Reality Check 2: Specialization can actually accelerate your growth. The more specific your field, the quicker you become an expert.
Fear #4: I don’t know how to specialize
-
Reality Check 1: There’s more information out there than ever—take a course, attend workshops, dive into the resources available.
-
Reality Check 2: Find a mentor. Someone who’s already specialized in your field can guide you and give you insights.
-
Reality Check 3: You don’t have to do it overnight. Take incremental steps toward specialization, build your skills, and grow your confidence along the way.
